About the Summit

To feed more than 10 billion people within our planetary boundaries by 2050, while tackling malnutrition and ending hunger; we will have to fundamentally change the food system, requiring coordinated action by all stakeholders across the globe. Hence, in preparation for the United Nations Food System Summit 2021, a fully virtual pre-event summit titled Bold Actions for Food as a Force for Good was held on 23-24 November 2020. The summit was organized by the World Economic Forum in partnership with other important organizations which include; One young world, World Farmers Organization, Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN), Unilever, World Business Council for Sustainable Development, etc. to convene leaders from governments, businesses, civil society, international organizations alongside innovators, entrepreneurs, scientists, financiers and youths with the aim of:

  1. Identifying an initial set of scalable, potential ‘game-changer’ initiatives to achieve a sustainable food system; and to agree on the partnerships, funding, and innovation hubs needed to implement these and accelerate their global scale-up in the run-up to the 2021 summit.
  2. Creating a global network of leaders at all levels to drive transformative change for sustainable food systems and involve the next generation.
  3. Agreeing on an initial set of bold actions & science-based principles to change the food system, to be adopted between now and the Summit.

Following this 2-day pre-event summit, several initiatives across the globe applied for the Food System Solutions Challenge Session hosted by One Young world as part of the aim of Bold Actions for Food as a Force for Good virtual summit to identify outstanding initiatives who will achieve sustainable food system and agree to partnerships and funding needed to implement this goal. Out of the large number of initiatives developing and implementing solutions to improve livelihoods in agriculture and enhance food nutrition and security, the Food and genes Initiative made it to the final stage and was selected as one of the four winners of the Solution Challenge.
